The short version. You can read this site and use the atlas without an account. If you make one, I keep your email address and name so you can sign in, and nothing else. No ads, no analytics, no mailing list, and I don't sell or share your details. Write to deluviasaga@gmail.com and I'll delete your account.
Deluvia (deluviasaga.ca) is made by one person in Canada. "I" below means me, the author; "the site" means deluviasaga.ca, including the atlas.
If you just visit
You don't need an account to read the site or use the atlas. When you visit:
- The server keeps a basic log of each request: your IP address, the page or file asked for, the time, and your browser's user-agent string. The hosting provider keeps these logs for a short time. I use them only to keep the site running and to deal with abuse.
- The atlas loads some map imagery from NASA's GIBS service, so your browser connects to NASA's servers directly, and they see your IP address the way any website would.
- Your browser remembers a couple of settings on your own device, using local storage: where you last left the map, and whether you've turned spoilers on. These never leave your browser, and clearing your site data removes them.
There are no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels and no third-party cookies for visitors who don't sign in.
If you make an account
Accounts open more of the atlas, such as the compendium. Sign-in is handled by Clerk, a service that stores the account on my behalf. Your account holds:
- your email address;
- your name and profile picture, if you sign in with Google and Google provides them;
- an account ID, and the times you signed up and signed in.
If you choose Sign in with Google, Google tells the site your name, email address and profile picture, and nothing else: no contacts, no files, no access to your Gmail. If you sign in by email instead, Clerk sends you a code or link to prove the address is yours.
Clerk keeps you signed in with a cookie, and uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a new sign-up isn't a bot. Those cookies are there for sign-in only.
I use your account for one thing: deciding what parts of the site to show you. I don't email you, I don't add you to a list, and I don't sell, rent or share your details with anyone. The only emails you'll get are the sign-in codes and verification messages Clerk sends because you asked for them.
Who else handles your data
- Clerk stores accounts and handles sign-in. It is based in the United States, so your account details may be stored there.
- Fly.io hosts the site, on servers in Toronto, and keeps the request logs described above.
- Google, only if you use Sign in with Google.
- Cloudflare, for the bot check during sign-up.
- NASA GIBS, for some map imagery.
Links on the site to YouTube and Instagram take you to those services, and their own privacy policies apply once you're there.
Seeing, changing or deleting your account
You can see and change your name, email and profile picture from the account menu when you're signed in. To delete your account, or to ask what I hold about you, email deluviasaga@gmail.com from the address on the account. I'll delete it within 30 days and tell you when it's done. Server logs aren't tied to your account and expire on their own.
Children
The site isn't aimed at children, and I don't knowingly hold accounts for anyone under 13. If you think a child has made an account, email me and I'll delete it.
Changes
If what the site collects changes, I'll update this page and its date first. If a change affects people who already have accounts, I'll say so on the site.
